Classifications

In this series of seminars students will learn the basis of British law, what it is and in broad terms, how it functions. Students will learn in detail what terms like public and private and criminal and civil actually mean, and how they are the same and different. They will learn where these labels come from and how we use them as well as understand how the British legal system is structured.

Criminal Liability

In this series of seminars students will learn what legal elements need to be present for a crime to have been committed. Students will learn in detail what actus reus and mens rea are. They will learn how to recognize them in different types of crimes. Students will then learn about some of the cases that underlie each element of criminal liability before looking at some exceptions to the rules.

Property Offences

In this series of seminars students will learn how to identify and classify an offence against property. Students will learn to identify different requirements for trespass, theft and robbery. Students will learn to identify both the requirements for each crime and the differences between them. Students will ultimately be able to decide which offence or offences to prosecute when given a case.

Defences

In this series of seminars students will learn what defences can be used for what crimes, and how. Students will learn what the defences of insanity, automatism, and intoxication are and what elements need to be met for them to operate. Students will also learn to use some additional defences including duress. Students will ultimately be able to decide how to use each defence in relation to the crime or crimes they have elected to study.
